Sexual Addiction
Sexual activity, like alcohol, drugs, and gambling, increases levels of dopamine in the brain. Dopamine is the primary neurotransmitter in the brain’s reward system. Dopamine creates pleasurable feelings. However, the brain’s reward system also makes us vulnerable to addiction. People are not addicted to sex. As with all addictions, people become addicted to the brain chemicals released during the substance use or activity (in this case, sex), not the substance or activity itself.

We live in a sexual society. Our young people are encountering sexual messages every day. Wonderfully, the Bible speaks to the topic of sex. Learn MoreFrequently Asked Questions
God created us as sexual beings. Our sexual drive points to two objectives. One objective is reproduction. Another objective is oneness with another person. Our sexual drive is a physical reminder that we are not sufficient in and of ourselves. We are oriented outward towards others. Physical sex, however, is not the highest aim for our sexuality. Rather, our sexual drive is a physical reminder of a deeper more important spiritual reality – that our needs are met outside of us, in a relationship with God.

Coming to the point of questioning your sexual orientation can raise a variety of emotions and responses. A few initial encouragements to keep in mind include:
- Resist the temptation to isolate and deal with your struggle alone.
- Be wise about where you seek counsel and support.
- Remember, your experience of same-sex attraction does not have to become the sole basis of your identity.
- Remember, God loves you. Many people with same-sex attraction have lived celibate, fully flourishing lives.
Helpful ACCFS Resource:
Sex education is important because our sexual impulses are powerful. Like other powerful realities such as guns, cars, and drugs, education must surround our engagement with these realities. Education answers three questions: first, it answers the question of how sexual intercourse works; second, it answers the question what physical and emotional pain can result from unwise sexual activity; lastly, it answers the question why we were created as sexual beings and how to steward our sexuality in celibate singleness or the fidelity of marriage.
