Depression in Adults

Psalm 40:1-2, “I waited patiently for the LORD: he inclined unto me, and heard my cry. He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.”

Depression has been called the “common cold” of mental health disorders because it occurs so frequently. It is the leading cause of disability worldwide. While its official name is Major Depressive Disorder, it is often referred to as ‘clinical depression.’ Numerous factors can lead to depression including: biological predispositions, life circumstances, perfectionism, health problems, unresolved grief and loss, and chronic stress.

Major Depressive Disorder is diagnosed when five or more of the following symptoms appear for at least a two-week period.

These symptoms include:

  • Sad or depressed mood.
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in activities that you usually find enjoyable.
  • Significant weight loss or gain.
  • Sleeping too much or too little.
  • Slower movements.
  • Low energy.
  • Feelings of worthlessness or inappropriate guilt.
  • Difficulty concentrating or indecisiveness.
  • Recurrent thoughts of death or suicide.
