How can I improve my mental health?

There are several skills that can support and improve the state of your mental health. And just as with any skill, repetition and commitment make a difference in the growth and effectiveness of that skill. Creating regular times to consider your mental health and then to lean into these checkpoints is a great starting point. A few other ongoing skills which can improve mental health are listed below:

  • Learn to understand your self-talk (Prov. 23:7).
  • Avoiding catastrophizing.
  • Use calming/coping thoughts.
  • Sit quietly and meditate on the comfort of the Word and the Lord’s peace.
  • Use the beauty of God’s creation to focus on the Creator.
  • Listen to spiritual songs and calming music.
  • Reduce unnecessary noise and distractions in your home and work environment.

How does my mental health affect me?

God created human beings with four primary aspects of life: the biological, psychological, relational, and spiritual. Each of these areas are interconnected, and thus our psychological (mental health) state impacts, either positively or negatively, our overall wellness in each of these other areas. Learn more about the importance of caring for your mental health with the resources listed below.

Helpful ACCFS Resources:

How do I check my mental health?

Our mental health is an important aspect of our overall well-being. Regular check-ups of mental health are just as important as regular check-ups of our physical health. Considering your thought patterns (self-talk), remaining accountable to key relationships in your life, and perhaps even visiting with a counselor at times can all be needed ways to check and support our mental health.

Helpful ACCFS Resources:

How does my mental health affect my physical health?

Mental health struggles (i.e., depression, anxiety, etc.) often can manifest themselves in our physical being. For example, physical symptoms of anxiety may include muscle tension and tightness, headaches, nausea, etc. while depression can lead to loss of energy, unhealthy thinking patterns, changes in mood or appetite, etc. Conversely, when someone is in a good mental state, their energy level, outlook, and overall well-being improve. You can learn more from some of the resources below.

Bio-Psycho-Social-Spiritual Model

God created human beings with four primary aspects of life: the biological, psychological, relational, and spiritual. Understanding these facets allows us to be better stewards of each area and helps us honor God’s design. Personal stewardship in these areas consists of the care and maintenance of our lives, for which God has made us responsible. In today’s society, it is common for people to either neglect or become consumed with the care and keeping of these areas. Read More
